La Maddalena is the largest island of an archipelago of 7 islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli).
The town, which dates back to the eighteenth century, is situated south of the main island facing Palau.
One of the most renowned beaches of the archipelago includes the famous pink sand beach along the coast of the Bubelli island, also known for being the location of the movie by Michelangelo Antonioni “Red Desert”.
Connected to La Maddalena by bridge, is the island of Caprera, famous for being the place where Giuseppe Gairbaldi spent the last years of his life.
Today, his house is a museum; the original clock and calendars hanging on a wall still show the time and date of his death: June 2, 1882.
