Porto Cervo is the main centre of the Costa Smeralda.
The modern town centre was built around the old port area starting from 1962 based on the ideas and brilliance of Prince Aga Khan. The town’s older centre develops around the Piazzetta, a town square from where a series of narrow alleys spread out, flanked by buildings built in the typical Costa Smeralda style.
The newly built area, instead, covers the surrounding bay with beautiful villas plunged into the typical vegetation of the Mediterranean maquis.
The new marina is the perfect place to moor vessels of any size, and in the summer it is filled with the yachts of the rich and famous.
The marina also hosts the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda that organises some of the most important and exiting yachting regatta in the world, including major sports events and celebrations.
One of Porto Cervo’s major tourist attractions is the church of Stella Maris, built in the 60’s by architect Michele Busiri Vici, which stands on a hilltop overlooking the gulf.
The church’s façade features a portico supported by six monolithic rocks, a cone-shaped bell tower with a very wide base and an iron cross at its tip. The church is considered a masterpiece of modern architecture.
